In 1916, Spider entered Yale and played freshman football. The following season, the sport was curtailed because of World War I, so Reinhardt played on the informal varsity team. He entered the military during the war and attained the rank of second lieutenant in the Field Artillery before resuming his football career, as an end at Yale. Spider was also the light-heavyweight boxing champion of Yale.
