After graduating, Sawyer played in the NFL with the Rochester Jeffersons. In 1922, he appeared as a wingback and blocking back in three games for Rochester which had a record of 0-3-1 and finished in fifteenth place in the NFL. The Jeffersons were coached by Sawyer's former teammate at Syracuse, offensive lineman Joe Alexander.
