Todd Simon
Birth and Death Dates:
b. April 21, 1972
Career Highlights:
An outstanding scoring center, Simon once had 146 points (including 53 goals) in junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League. After that season, the OHL All-Star was selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the 9th round (203rd overall) of the 1992 NHL Draft. Simon spent the next three seasons in the AHL with the Sabres' minor league affiliate, the Rochester Americans. In the AHL, he continued his scoring prowess with 268 points in 192 games, but the NHL still eluded him. He was called up by the Sabres for only 15 games during the 1993-93 season. That year, however, he also played in 5 playoff games and scored a game-winning goal for the Sabres against the New Jersey Devils.
Despite his huge minor league numbers and playoff goal, Simon was released by the Sabres following the 1993-93 season. He later said: "I don't think I got a fair shot in Buffalo...I was only up 15 games and I didn't get to play much...I need lots of ice time to show what I can do. When you play only a couple of shifts, it's hard." With no other NHL teams willing to give Todd a shot, he decided to leave the AHL and join the Las Vegas Thunder of the IHL. In 1996, he played for the Thunder and the Detroit Vipers, finished third in the league in scoring (105 points) and was named to the IHL All-Star team. From 1997-2000, Simon played for the Cincinnati Cyclones of the IHL and was one of the top players in the league, scoring 105 points during the 1997-98 season!
