Goldberg played basketball at Duquesne University in the early 1950s, when the program perennially ranked in the top twenty teams according to the AP poll (the poll began in 1949). One of Goldberg's teammates during his senior season was Sid Dambrot.

Career Highlights:
Goldberg played three seasons at Duquense and was an important member of the Dukes' team. In 1950, Duquesne finished the regular season with a record of 22-4 and was ranked No. 6 in the nation. They won the first round of the NIT (National Invitational Tournament) before losing, 62-52, to eventual champion CCNY in the semifinal. In the third place game, the Dukes lost to St. John's in overtime, 69-67, to finish fourth.

After a mediocre season in 1951 (they were not ranked in the final poll), Goldberg and the Dukes returned to the postseason in 1952 on the strength of a 22-3 regular season record. They finished the season ranked No. 4, and were invited to both the NIT and NCAA. In the NIT, they finished fourth, and in the NCAA, they made it to Mideast Regional Final before losing to Illinois, 74-68.
