Abe Stoneberg

Abraham Stoneberg

A two-sport star at Syracuse University (baseball and football) in the late 1920s and early 1930s, Stoneberg was a member of the Jewish fraternity ZBT (Zeta Beta Tau) and served as the football team's alternate captain as a senior in 1931.

Career Highlights:
After attending Cushing Academy, a boarding school in Massachusetts, Stoneberg entered Syracuse University and starred on the freshman football team in 1928. The following year, as a sophomore, he won a starting spot at the end position, although the Orange had a number of returning varsity players competing against him. Stoneberg made the most out of the opportunity and helped lead Syracuse to a record of 6-3-0. Among his teammates were lineman Henry Obst and back Irv Constantine.

The following year, another Jewish player, Dick Fishel joined the varsity. With a big, powerful line, the Orange had early season success, shutting out their first three opponents, including Rutgers, a game in which Syracuse rolled up 483 yards in their 27-0 victory. Despite some injury problems, Syracuse finished the season with a record of 5-2-2.

In 1931, Stoneberg's senior season, Syracuse played very well and finished with a record of 7-1-1 as Stoneberg scored the first points of his college career, finishing the season with two touchdowns.
